What is LSLS?

The A.G. Bell Academy for Listening and Spoken Language offers certification for Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLS) as either Auditory-Verbal Therapists (LSLS Cert AVT) or Auditory-Verbal Educators (LSLS AVEd). A LSLS Cert AVT is a therapist who provides individualized services, typically for children who are not in special classrooms. Because Denise Gage is a LSLS Cert AVT, she focuses on the use of sound (audition) as the primary channel for learning and gaining meaning from the environment regardless of the degree of hearing loss. Auditory/verbal practice is based on well-defined principles of treatment. The LSLS Cert AVT is a cross-disciplinarian clinician. Skills are drawn from three primary professions: audiology, speech-language, and education of the deaf, with basic knowledge of other professions including, but not limited to, otology, sensorimotor integration, child development, psychology, family counseling. The LSLS Cert AVT has cross-disciplinary skills.

What is required to become a LSLS Cert AVT?

In order to become a LSLS Cert. AVT, one must first have a degree in either audiology, speech-language pathology, deaf education, or related field AND a license, certification, or appropriate credential necessary to practice audiology, speech-language pathology, or education of the hearing impaired in the professional’s jurisdiction.
